TIP: Finding a Unique Ceremony Reading

March 20th, 2012

One of the most common questions we receive from brides relates to finding a non-cheesy wedding reading. With more of our clients choosing to have a non-religious or multi-cultural ceremony, they’re searching for text that directly speaks to their unique relationship rather than verses straight from the Bible.

Unfortunately, a quick Google search results in millions (1.3 million to be exact) of readings—some more obscure than others—that take a long time to sift through. And what working, modern couple has time to read millions of possible readings while simultaneously planning a 200-person wedding?

Thankfully, Rev. Barry Kolanowski from the Chicago Weddings team encourages couples to use unique wedding readings that speak to every individual relationship, including passages movies and pop culture. Did you even realize you could have a ceremony reading straight from “Sex and the City?”

Here are a few of our favorites, which are all sure to make your ceremony just as exceptional as you and your partner. (Click on the linked titles to acess the full readings)

The Art of a Good Marriage – By Wilfred Arlan Peterson

A good marriage must be created.
In marriage the “little” things are the big things.
It is never being too old to hold hands.
It is remembering to say,”I love you” at least once a day… (continued)

I Do – Carrie Bradshaw, Sex in the City (From episode 19, “The Chicken Dance”)

His ‘hello’ was the end of her endings.
Her laugh was their first step down the aisle.
His hand would be hers to hold forever.
His forever was as simple as her smile… (continued)

The Key To Love – Chinese poem from 1st Century

The key to love is understanding. The ability to comprehend not only the spoken word, but those unspoken gestures, the little things that say so much by themselves.

The key to love is forgiveness. To accept each other’s faults and pardon mistakes, without forgetting, but with remembering what you learn from them.

The key to love is sharing. Facing your good fortunes, as well as the bad together. Both conquering problems, forever searching for ways to intensify your happiness… (continued)

Irish Wedding Blessing #1

May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon the fields.
May the light of friendship guide your paths together.
May the laughter of children grace the halls of your home…. (continued)

Jane Eyre – By Charlotte Bronte

I have for the first time found what I can truly love—I have found you. You are my sympathy, my better self, my good angel, I am bound to you with a strong attachment. I think you good gifted, lovely: a fervent, solemn passion is conceived in my heart; it leans to you, draws you to my centre and spring of life, wraps my existence about you and kindling in pure, powerful flame, fuses you and me in one.

To Be One With Each Other – By George Eliot

What greater thing is there for two human souls than to feel that they are joined together to strengthen each other in all labor, to minister to each other in all sorrow, to share with each other in all gladness, to be one with each other in the silent unspoken memories?

—–

One growing wedding reading trend is choosing a passage from the stacks of well-loved children’s books at the library. The words are simple and sincere, and can often evoke sentimental feelings from the couple or guests hearing it.

The New York Public Library provides a list of children’s book wedding reading ideas on their website, though there are hundreds more you could choose from, all of which are endearing and personal.

However, one we never tire of seeing at weddings is an excerpt from “I Like You” by Sandol Stoddard Warburg:

I like you and I know why
I like you because you are a good person to like
I like you because when I tell you something special, you know it’s special
And you remember it a long, long time
You say, Remember when you told me something special
And both of us remember…. (continued)

Perhaps the most important thing to remember when choosing a wedding reading for your ceremony is to choose something that truly means something to you—it doesn’t have to be a traditional reading or even from a book. Did you go to a special concert early in your relationship? Perhaps song lyrics would be most meaningful. If your fiancé sent you a sweet card or wrote a nice note that you’ve saved over the years, it could be integrated into your reading or vows.

The possibilities for significant wedding readings are endless; you just need to know where to look! Does you have unique reading suggestions to add to our list?

Hitched: Irene & Adam’s Morton Arboretum Wedding – The Reception

March 9th, 2012

Happy Friday!

I’m finally wrapping up Irene and Adam’s wonderful wedding day with their reception photos by Dan Gin… Please check out Part 1 (The Ceremony) and Part 2 (The Details). They kicked off the dinner with their First Dance. You may notice that Irene was wearing a deep red peony corsage on her wrist, and that was because she didn’t want to bother toting around a bouquet… Smart!

Cutting their unique phoenix cake (see here for close ups)

Their reception was full of surprises, including two lion dancers that weaved through the crowds.

Erica from Toast & Jam kept the dance floor busy all night long.

Not only was there dancing… there was KARAOKE!!

… Which was just as busy as the dance floor!

And the last surprise… a WOW BAO STATION!! Guests went NUTS for these yummy snacks!

Thank you Irene and Adam, for letting Sweetchic Events be a part of your amazing, fun-filled weekend!!

Hitched: Irene & Adam’s Morton Arboretum Wedding – The Details

February 27th, 2012

We left off after Irene and Adam’s intimate 11/11/11 (at 11AM!) wedding ceremony. Their reception was actually held the following evening at the Morton Arboretum’s Gingko Room, located inside the Visitor’s Room. And now I’d like to share with you their details.

Photos by Dan Gin Photography.

As guests entered the Visitor’s Center, they were welcomed by two giant red Chinese banners and walked through a Chinese double happiness symbol for good luck, all created by Art of Imagination.

Some of the cutest escort cards, with paper cut-outs of the 12 Chinese zodiac symbols.

Instead of a guestbook, guests signed a traditional Chinese signing cloth.

Both Irene and Adam have a science background, so it was only natural that guests should sip the signature lychee martini cocktail from mini test tubes!

These beautiful red paper lanterns added ambiance and a Chinese touch to the beautiful room.

Menu cards designed by Spilled Ink Press looked elegant over the gold brocade napkins.

Elegant florals by Trudy’s Flowers.

Just about the cutest cake topper ever!! They love their dogs and actually met each other at a dog park!

Irene’s mom planned the most spectacular candy table… guests went CUH-RAZY over it!

Adam is a chemist, and brewed his own beer favors and printed the most adorable custom labels… AMAZING!

One more post coming up with reception photos!

Hitched: Irene & Adam’s Morton Arboretum Wedding 1

February 16th, 2012

I am so excited to finally share Irene and Adam’s amazing 11/11/11 wedding with the blog! They had so many fun ideas that were so uniquely them, it was truly a pleasure to bring all the pieces of the puzzle together.

Irene & Adam’s wedding was a two-pronged affair… first, there was their 11/11/11 intimate, family-only wedding ceremony, which took place AT 11AM! It was held at the beautiful Founder’s Room at the Morton Arboretum and then the next day, the reception was held at Morton’s Gingko Room.

Here are some of my favorite getting ready and ceremony shots from 11/11/11 by the talented Dan of Dan Gin Photography.

I think these are just about the cutest welcome bag cards I’ve seen! And it totally looks like them!

This is the mini-itinerary that we put together for all of our couples and their bridal parties… pocket-size!

Gorgeous bouquet featuring lush fuchsia and red peonies and red roses by Trudy’s Flowers.

Irene chose a stunning blush pink Vera Wang from David’s Bridal gown… ruffles and tiers and chiffon, oh my!

The intimate ceremony in the Founders Room for family only!

Adam is a chemist, so instead of the typical Unity Candle lighting ceremony, they opted to do something completely out of the box… they created Elephant’s Toothpaste! (Look it up)

Stay tuned for more photo goodness from their reception!

Tip: Using Chicago Restaurant Week for Your Wedding

February 14th, 2012

Whether you’re a self-professed foodie living in Chicago or you’re planning a Chicagoland wedding from another state, there’s a good chance you’ve spotted news about Chicago Restaurant Week this February 17-26. Not much goes hand-in-hand with the Chicago food scene better than the Chicago wedding scene; Sweetchic Events has been quoted about working with foodie couples to create the perfect cultured wedding feast, and we notice more people developing a matrimonious post-wedding dining experience for their guests.

So how can Chicago Restaurant Week help plan your upcoming Chicago wedding? You have a few options:

  • Go on relatively inexpensive restaurant dates (the multi-course prix fixe menus range from $22-$44 per person) as a way to get away from the stresses of wedding planning
  • Familiarize yourself with local fare you might be interested in serving at your wedding
  • Use Restaurant Week to investigate local restaurants that also offer catering packages
  • Explore hotspots with private rooms that would be perfect for a wedding rehearsal dinner

With more than 200 restaurants in the city and suburbs participating in Chicago Restaurant Week this year, how can you even begin to narrow down your choices? Believe us, it’s a really tough decision with many delicious options. Here are our five picks for participating Chicago restaurants fit for rehearsal dinner, catering, wedding showers and event space options:

1. Phil Stefani’s 437 Rush (437 N. Rush, Chicago) – A catering, shower, or rehearsal dinner option

437 Rush offers private dining areas for showers, large events and wedding rehearsal dinners (from 25-300 guests), and with four restaurants and Navy Pier cuisine under their belt, the Phil Stefani group also has a grip on the Chicago wedding catering industry. During Chicago Restaurant Week, 437 Rush has a prix fixe menu ranging from filet mignon and short ribs to lasagna and chicken. Did we mention the Clintons are regulars?

2. 676 Restaurant & Bar (676 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago) – A rehearsal dinner or shower option

We first considered 676 Restaurant & Bar in the Omni Hotel as we compiled a list of rehearsal dinner options for a client, but it was the menu and local approach to dining that intrigued us—and piqued our appetites. Chef Daven Wardynski has a specialty for organic, sustainable fare that includes using honey from his own hive and vegetables grown on the hotel sundeck in his unique creations. The restaurant has two semi-private dining spaces for up to 40 guests, and a Restaurant Week prix fixe menu featuring a variety of food straight from Midwestern farms and fisheries.

3. Vie Restaurant (4471 Lawn Ave., Western Springs) – A rehearsal dinner or shower option

Vie Restaurant may be located in the suburbs (about 18 miles from the loop), but it has gotten major attention from the likes of the Chicago Tribune’s Phil Vettel and Chicago Magazine, even being named by Gayot.com as one of the top 40 restaurants in the United States. Chef Paul Virant’s creations have been called “magical,” and he has years of experience working in top Chicago restaurants Ambria, Charlie Trotter, Everest, and Blackbird under his belt. The restaurant has private dining options for up to 85 guests and a prix fixe Restaurant Week dinner menu that mixes seasonal fare with dessert options that will make your mouth water.

4. Carlucci Rosemont (6111 N. River Road, Rosemont) – A rehearsal dinner, shower, or wedding option

Carlucci Rosemont has something that just about everyone can enjoy: hearty, authentic Italian cuisine reminiscent of a family kitchen and home cooking. A perennial Chicago Magazine critic’s choice winner and a favorite of Wine Spectacular, Carlucci’s several private dining areas can accommodate 10-300 guests and showcase exposed beam ceilings and European chandeliers. If you have visiting family members and friends staying near O’Hare, the location could not get much more convenient. Carlucci’s prix fixe Restaurant Week menus include salmon, steak, handmade pasta, and most importantly: tiramisu.

5. The Dining Room at Kendall College (900 N. North Branch, Chicago) – a rehearsal dinner, shower, or wedding option

Kendall College has widely been recognized in the media for being the best culinary institute in Chicago; impeccable online reviews call it an elegant, fine dining experience focused on sustainability and eco-friendly efforts. Chefs-in-training prepare seasonal fare for patrons under the helpful watch of experienced kitchen and service instructors, and all gratuities are used for scholarships and student supplies. The Kendall College private event spaces display magnificent views of the city skyline and can accommodate 40-100 guests, which may be a unique option if you’re hoping to plan a chic event on a budget. The Restaurant Week option allows diners to choose from any of the college’s current menus, giving everyone more delicious bang for their buck.
